National Developmental Disabilities Month: Statistics and the Power of Early Intervention

Each March, National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month spotlights the experiences, challenges, and victories of millions of Americans with developmental disabilities, while championing the importance of support and inclusion for all.

What Are Developmental Disabilities?

Developmental disabilities are a group of lifelong conditions that affect physical, cognitive, learning, and behavioral areas. They include autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, and others, and are typically diagnosed in early childhood.

How Common Are Developmental Disabilities?

  • According to the CDC, about 1 in 6 children in the U.S. (aged 3–17) have one or more developmental disabilities, ranging from speech and language disorders to more complex challenges like intellectual disability and autism.

  • These rates have increased over the past decades, likely due to better awareness, broader diagnostic criteria, and improved early screening.

The Power of Early Intervention

Early intervention, identifying and providing support in the first years of life, can dramatically improve outcomes:

  • Children who receive speech, occupational, behavioral, or physical therapy before age 3 are more likely to develop critical skills for communication, learning, and self-care.

  • Family support, specialized education, and community resources can help children reach their fullest potential, while lowering the risk of more serious issues later in life.

Parents, healthcare providers, and educators are crucial partners in spotting early signs and seeking evaluations. If you have concerns about your child's development, don't “wait and see”—early action makes a world of difference.

Building Inclusion and Success

Developmental disabilities do not define a person’s capacity for success. With individualized support, young people with these disabilities attend college, learn new skills, hold jobs, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Early intervention, paired with accessible education and community inclusion, ensures every child has the opportunity to thrive.

How You Can Support

  • Learn about developmental milestones—early awareness leads to early support.

  • Invest time in inclusive activities and accessible spaces.

  • Raise awareness and advocate for community programs that empower all children and families.

This month reminds us that, with understanding, early intervention, and a focus on abilities, children and adults with developmental disabilities can achieve their dreams and enrich the communities they help build.
