Speech Therapy and Motivation

Updated: May 17, 2023

Sometimes your child can struggle with his or her Speech Therapy sessions. This is normal. We are asking them to do some of the things that can be most difficult for them. It's hard, and we get that. As therapists we are always striving to find the perfect balance between making activities challenging while allowing for enough success that the child feels good about their participation.

As a parent, your child may be resistant to you offering corrections or reminders to use their newly learned skills. Don't let it become a battle! When you are both calm, or perhaps even when the Speech Therapist is present, make an agreement with your child on where and when it's OK for you to remind them to use their new skill. Maybe it's for an hour after school, or during dinner time, or on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, or whatever works for both of you.

Remember, learning and using a new skill takes time! Be patient and keep working with your child and they will eventually integrate the new skill into their everyday life :)
